I am writing in respect of recent articles on the issue of diversity and race in the legal profession.
The ‘glass ceiling’ starts in the law schools. Contrary to the learning providers’ claims of equal opportunities and diversity, when it comes to pass rates the reality proves the opposite. We are talking about massively disproportionate and blatantly surreal results where up to 90% of white English students pass in the first sits; the total pass rate after the final sits for Anglo-Asians drops to around 50-60%; and the percentage rate for foreign students graduating is 5% at most.
This ratio is not much different in the private sector, with the subtle difference that visiting students from the Commonwealth have pass rates that just about match those of the white English.
Anyone with basic statistical knowledge would be hard pushed not to notice the gross disparities. A whopping 70-80% of students receiving commendations and distinctions, with almost all white English readily graduating, defies any conventional logic.
