I would like to congratulate Linda Dobbs QC on her appointment as the England's first black High Court judge after all these years (see [2004] Gazette, 9 September, 4).
The appointment speaks volumes. It is interesting to see that the English judiciary has at long last recognised the intellectual abilities of the ethnic minorities in Britain.
As she rightly said 'I am confident, nevertheless, that I am the first of many to come'. These are words of encouragement to up-and-coming young black lawyers in Britain.
It is not surprising to see that a black person has been appointed to such a privileged position as a High Court judge, but what is surprising is that it has taken this long to arrive at this point.
