I refer to the recent article on the Law Society temporarily registering all firms as concern grows over insurance mediation (see [2005] Gazette, 3 February, 3).
I admit to completing the relevant sections in my firm's RF1 without fully appreciating its implication. However, many of the insurers with whom I have had minimal dealings over the years have since written to me in simple terms advising of the requirement for registration and leaving little doubt as to its necessity. A search of the Financial Services Authority Web site disclosed that my firm was not on the register - and I raised the issue with the Law Society, which has since confirmed that my firm's details have been forwarded for registration.
I must applaud the Law Society's initiative in temporarily registering all firms. However, from my experience, few practitioners could have missed the need to register, as this was more than adequately highlighted by most insurers.
On this occasion, the Law Society is only assisting those careless lawyers who have not read their incoming mail.
