I note the enthusiastic welcome given by the Law Society's chief executive to the increase in compensation levels for poor service (see [2003] Gazette, 27 July, 1).

While I support the theory behind this, surely this comment highlights the need for one body to represent the interests of solicitors and one to regulate us.

For the same body to attempt to fulfil both functions is impossible.
