While dismissing our campaign to stop the claims roundabout, it is a shame that Paul Asplin (see [2006] Gazette, 18 May, 15) did not explain that insurers have limited (if any) costs in servicing uninsured claims because it could be that the solicitors to whom they have sold the personal injury work do the uninsured work free as part of the deal where the insurer makes some £600 a claim. This means the insurer could be pocketing the premium as additional profit.
It may be of interest to your readers that another reason why legal expenses insurance policies are so popular with insurers is because they stop claimant solicitors obtaining any uplift on costs - hence they act as a defensive mechanism as well.
The Accident Relief Campaign is now calling on personal injury solicitors nationwide who support its aims to join its campaign to fight for the interests of the public.
