Society launches specialist section for property lawyers

A section for property lawyers was this week launched by the Law Society.

Only the third section to be created - after those for practice management and probate - the section will offer members access to a range of services, including a dedicated journal, on-line discussion forum, and an e-mail alert service on major developments in the field.

There will also be a full events programme and discounts on key legal texts and training programmes.

The introduction of e-conveyancing, changes to stamp duty, and the possibility of the conveyancing market opening up to non-lawyers are all major issues facing property lawyers at the moment.

Law Society chief executive Janet Paraskeva said: 'Property lawyers face very significant changes in the way they practise as well as challenges posed by potential new competitors.

The property section will provide its members, both residential and commercial property solicitors, with the kind of information that will help them prepare adequately for these changes.'

- Membership costs 88.13, or 70.50 for members of other sections or sole practitioners.
