A Birmingham solicitor will this week challenge the results of the constituency's Law Society elections on the grounds that members were allegedly sent ballot papers too late or did not receive them at all.

Mike Lohmus, a partner in Plunkett Lohmus, will ask an election challenge committee chaired by Society president Peter Williamson, to declare the original election - won by Jonas Roy Bloom partner Malcolm Fowler - void.

A Society spokesman said: 'It would be inappropriate to comment at this stage because the challenge will be determined as provided for in the by-laws.

The decision of the challenge committee will be published in due course.'
