I am sure we are all very pleased that Edward Solomons, chairman of the rules and ethics committee of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), is grateful to the Gazette for its 'excellent coverage' of the new Solicitors Code of Conduct and that we are all very reassured by his affirmation that the SRA would like to hear from solicitors direct.
However, I think it is vital that solicitors continue to pass their comments on to the Law Society so that it can collate the views of practitioners and develop from them strong coherent arguments to lobby on our behalf. After all, if anyone wishes to, they can always 'copy the SRA in', but to leave the Law Society out of the loop would be a huge mistake.
At long last, the Law Society is able really to represent our profession. Surely the last thing we should do is be persuaded to undermine its ability to do so by starving it of the information it needs to do its job effectively?
