In response to Geraldine Dymond's letter (see [2003] Gazette, 31 July, 16), I agree that it is impossible for anyone to have it all.

However, the attitude that each individual must fight their corner without support is something that equal opportunities legislation has been trying for some time now to address.

It is admirable that in the past individuals fought their own corner, often without support or recognition, and it is a fact of life that we all must continue to do so.

The implied argument that 'it was tough for me - why should you have it easier' is thoughtless.

In my experience, this thoughtless attitude of some women who have struggled to the top often contributes to undermining the position of women further down the pecking order and maintaining the unsatisfactory status quo.
