Law schools will soon be able to give students 'Bachelor of Law' (LLB) status even if they have not got a law degree, with the College of Law becoming the first private institution empowered to award degrees.

The move comes after the Privy Council granted an order following a recommendation by the Quality Assurance Agency.

College of Law chief executive Nigel Savage said: 'The move will make a career in the law more attractive and will widen the talent pool available to the legal services market. There are particular benefits for those students converting from a non-law degree through the Graduate Diploma in Law, as they will now be awarded a degree following completion of their vocational qualification with us.'

BPP Law School chief executive Peter Crisp confirmed it had also applied and was awaiting a result, due next year.
