Plans for the new UK Supreme Court were unveiled by the Department for Constitutional Affairs this week. Among the most radical of changes to Middlesex Guildhall will be the opening up of large airy spaces in the building and a sizeable area open to the public, including a café. The refurbished Grade II* listed building, which is on Parliament Square, is to house three separate courtrooms and a library three floors high. The Law Lords will also be more visible under architects Feilden and Mawson's plans, which will cost £30 million to implement. One member of the design team suggested that Supreme Court cases could in future be televised into the public spaces. The plans have now been submitted to Westminster City Council. If they are approved, the new court should be open for business in 2009.
