In view of the difficulties in relation to run-off cover for retiring solicitors, it is perhaps ironic that the Solicitors Indemnity Fund (SIF), having run up a surplus of £100 million, is now paying £50 million of that surplus to fund Law Society staff pensions, many of which were opened on a final salary basis.
In view of the fact that the contributions to the SIF have been made by solicitors - many of whom may be nearing retirement - would it not have been fairer to have used that £50 million to give some level of run-off cover for those retiring solicitors?
