Taking no risk ;The fact that limited liability partnerships are on the way should not deflect solicitors from risk management ;The appointment by City firm DLA of the legal professions first risk management director is hopefully only a formal signal of what many solicitors firms already do. ;Risk is an ever greater feature of solicitors work, whether it be assessing the prospects of potential conditional fee cases, judging the adequacy of Chinese walls, or keeping information confidential. ;Firms also have to consider risk in relation to themselves as employers. ;For there can be no doubt, as DLAs Clive Pracy tell us this week (see page 9), that in a people business like the law, there are a great number of things that can go wrong. And the tripwires just seem to be multiplying, especially when it comes to providing legal services over the Internet. ;That some form of protection is on the way in the form of limited liability partnerships (see page 3) should not deflect solicitors from the importance of risk management. ;But there is an opportunity here for solicitors it is no surprise that the final stage of DLAs risk programme is to roll it out to clients. The Turnbull report on corporate governance highlighted risk management and control. Listed companies must publish their approach to it. ;And if companies turn to law firms for help, solicitors can start positioning themselves as general business advisers, for the benefit of all. ; ; ;
