The Law of Charities

by Peter LuxtonOxford University Press, 145This weighty tome (it comes at 1,000 pages) is published in the year which marks the 400th anniversary of the Statute of Elizabeth, whose preamble is still sometimes referred to by the courts in determining whether a purpose is charitable.

There has been a huge growth in charity law over the last decade, and rather than concentrate on the creation of charitable trusts, the author, an academic at De Montfort University, places legal structure and governance at the centre of his analysis, while also giving due weight to issues such as taxation, the Charity Commissioners and the Trustee Act 2000.

Judith Hill of London firm Farrer & Co is the consultant editor.
