The Love Register
Ros Bever's letter has raised an issue which has been on a lot of people's minds in relation to the Civil Partnership Bill (see [2003] Gazette, 10 July, 20).
I believe that it is a question of commitment, whether for same-sex or opposite-sex couples.
We have to register many aspects of our life ( for example, our car), so surely a registration that will protect the position of the one we love is the most important registration of all.
The granting of automatically acquired rights, without the need to register, would allow couples to avoid having to consider that commitment.
It would also be difficult to prove the intention of the parties, which may itself lead to an injustice.
After all, it is a simple and inexpensive procedure to register.
