Vacancies for non-council members of the council membership committee

Applications are invited for a number of geographical and non-geographical places on the Law Society Council membership committee.

The committee advises the council on the designation of non-constituency council seats whenever a vacancy arises in such a seat, keeps the constituency boundaries for council elections under review and advises generally on the size and representative nature of the council.

The majority of the members is not made up of council members, and it is made up of a geographical component and a non-geographical component consisting of representatives from a range of interest groups and categories of solicitors.

The geographical places on the committee which need to be filled are defined by reference to the relevant regional association area, except in the case of the south-east, which is defined for the purpose of this advertisement as Kent, Surrey and Sussex).

The areas are: Greater London (excluding the City of London and the area of the City of Westminster and Holborn Law Society), north-east, south, south-east, south-west, and Yorkshire.

Any member of the Law Society practising or employed in the area is eligible to be appointed to the place on the committee representing that area.

The non-geographical seats, which are open to any member of the Law Society within the category or area of practice concerned, are for representatives of the following:

- Ethnic Minorities;- Local Government;- Women Solicitors.

The time commitment involved is of the order of three or four all-day meetings a year, but it is not possible to be more precise than this.

The Society wishes to encourage applications from all eligible solicitors irrespective of gender, race, colour, age, sexual orientation or disability and appointments will be based on merit, following an open and clear selection process.
