We need more women
At Rights of Women we were delighted to be short-listed for the Gazette-sponsored Liberty/Justice Human Rights Award (see [2001] Gazette, 14 December, 1).
It was welcome recognition for the organisation's remarkable success over the last few years - running training courses and the 'Women's Rights are Human Rights' conference in 2000, producing information leaflets and a domestic violence injunction handbook for women.
It is a fitting commemoration of the organisation's 25th year, and a marker of the continued need for women-run services for women at a time when all too often women's issues struggle to be given room on the agenda and women's services struggle to win the funds they need to stay afloat.
We need women lawyers.
Our evening telephone advice line relies on trained volunteers and we invite women readers to consider giving half an evening a month to Rights of Women.
Feedback from callers shows how much they appreciate the service and how women's need for our helpline remains undiminished.
