US firm White & Case will cut between 80 and 95 fee-earners and support staff in London as part of plans to make 200 associates and 200 support staff redundant worldwide.
The firm said today (10 March) that it is also undertaking an ‘evaluation of its partnership’ which will result in a reduction in partner headcount. It would not specify how many partners are under threat.
In a statement, White & Case chairman Hugh Verrier said: ‘I greatly regret having to take these actions. The decision was made only after a very careful review of our business. I believe these measures provide the best way forward to meet the challenges we face today and to ensure the firm’s long-term success.’
White & Case made 70 lawyers and 90 associates redundant in a separate redundancy consultation in November last year.
Three other US firms with London offices also announced redundancies today. Morgan Lewis will cut 55 lawyers and 161 support staff, King & Spalding will cut 37 lawyers and 85 support staff, and K&L Gates will cut 36 lawyers and 76 staff. All three declined to comment on how the cuts might affect their London offices.
