In a recent press release, the Legal Services Commission congratulated itself on the take-up of new contracts to do criminal work in January 2008.

What the commission omitted to mention is the fact that the supplier base has suffered a sudden withdrawal of 10% of

the total number of firms undertaking such work, with over two-thirds of remaining firms indicating that they are not willing to take on extra criminal work. The cull has started.
