Law firms have improved their websites by adopting a 'back-to-basics' approach, according to web technology company Intendance - with City firm Withers showing the greatest improvement.

Withers has won the 'most improved website' accolade in Intendance's prestigious Fast 50 awards, the Gazette can reveal. The research looks at the websites of the 50 fastest-growing law firms.

An Intendance spokeswoman said there was a move away from a previous trend among law firms to use too many Adobe Flash-based features, adding that menus and other aspects of firms' sites had become more basic.

Withers achieved 13th place this year, after being ranked 49th last year. It converted its Adobe Flash-based website to an HTML site that is more easily read by search engines and site visitors.

Withers marketing manager Claire O'Connor said: 'Our previous website was launched in 2000 at a time when corporate websites were very much more brochure-ware and less of an interactive information source than they are today. Our HTML-based website reflects the changes that have occurred online as well as a desire to be able to make our site visible to a wider audience.'
