Coronation Street’s public legal education efforts in recent years have not gone unnoticed by Obiter, who has been following the residents of the UK’s most famous cobbled street for the last 30 or so years. For instance, in a recent trial involving Yasmeen Metcalf, the jury was sat in a separate room watching proceedings via video-link, highlighting how trials have been running during the pandemic. A legal aid poster often features in the background of prison scenes.
But the soap outdid itself with last night’s episode, when solicitor Adam Barlow popped into the Kabin (the local newsagent) to see if his copy of the Law Gazette had arrived. Sadly, it hadn’t (Obiter was on the phone to the Gazette’s subscriptions team first thing this morning).
As well as wondering why Adam doesn’t get his copy delivered to his office, legal Twitter helpfully pointed out that Ken Barlow’s grandson can still keep up to date with all the latest news via the Gazette’s Daily News Update, which is emailed every weekday afternoon.
Nevertheless, Obiter is delighted to see the Gazette feature in such an iconic soap. Who knows, perhaps Adam and his colleague Imran Habeeb might feature on the front cover one day. Having advised or represented most of the Street at one point or another, they’ll certainly have a few tales to tell.
