Sheila Pratt, a pioneering editor of the Law Society Gazette at the turn of the 1990s, left an impressive legacy. And not just a propos this journal. Her alma mater, Malton School in North Yorkshire, got in touch with an update on how it is spending the £100,000 bequeathed by Sheila, who was its head girl in 1949, when she died in 2013.

Resurfaced tennis courts, an upgraded reception area and an extended common room have all been part-funded by her generosity.

But most of the money has been allocated for a new community resource centre that will be used in the evenings and weekends to provide adult education services, for which there is currently no provision in Ryedale.

Donations are still being sought for the centre, planned for 2022. Local solicitors and businesses who would like to contribute are invited to contact the school’s learning manager and fundraiser Nick Olsen: nxo@maltonschool.org.
