Obiter is all for law firms supporting their local football teams by chucking some money their way. But choosing to sponsor a club’s full-time result tweet is always going to be tricky.

So it was last week, when Scunthorpe United of the National League posted solemnly on X that they had lost 3-2 away to Carlisle, with a simple and down-in-the-mouth message of ‘Not our night’.

But the sponsor’s message had to be included. And so, the result of the match was followed by a handshake emoji and the message: ‘Divorce doesn’t have to mean conflict. Speak to Symes Bains Broomer Solicitors, your local family law experts.’

One imagines a few Scunny fans might have wanted a separation from their club after defeat at Brunton Park (although they remain well set for a play-off place), but does an away loss really prompt thoughts of marital strife?

Things did not improve at the weekend, as the Iron lost 6-3 at home to Boston United. This time the grim news was accompanied by a little cod philosophy: ‘Love changes, life changes. Protect your family with a will from Symes Baines Broomer Solicitors, your local expert.’

‘Scunny ’till I die’, as they sing at Glanford Park.
