Baroness Kennedy QC evokes memories of London mayor Sadiq Khan as ‘reliable’ articled clerk.

Irwin Mitchell pulled out all the stops for the launch of its London employment and professional discipline team, not only with an array of colourful balloons but also an appearance by London mayor Sadiq Khan.

Readers will know, of course, that the bus driver’s son started out as a human rights solicitor. Two of Irwin Mitchell’s three-strong team – Shah Qureshi and Shazia Khan – also trained under Khan. The event provided a chance for Sadiq to catch up with Baroness Kennedy (Helena Kennedy QC), who took great delight in telling guests that she has known the mayor as ‘man and boy’. Recalling when she worked with him at Christian Fisher, Kennedy described Khan as ‘the most reliable articled clerk’ who left ‘no stone unturned’.

Khan had nothing but praise for the legal profession, concluding his gushing speech with the observation that history is ‘littered with brave lawyers’. As the mayor ascends the greasy pole – Obiter has a tenner on him as the next Labour leader – perhaps that history will include him.
