Obiter is all for law firms supporting their local football teams by putting some money towards sponsorship. But choosing to sponsor a club’s full-time result tweet is always going to be fraught with danger.
So it was that Scunthorpe United of the National League posted solemnly on X last Tuesday that they had lost 3-2 away to Carlisle, with a simple and downbeat message of ‘Not our night’.
But the sponsor’s message had to be included. And so, incongruously, the result of the match was following by a handshake emoji and the message: ‘Divorce doesn’t have to mean conflict. Speal to Symes Bains Broomer Solicitors, your local family law experts’.

One imagines a few Scunny fans might have wanted a separation from their club after defeat at Brunton Park (although they remain well set for a play-off place), but does an away loss really trigger divorce?
Things did not improve at the weekend, as the Iron lost 6-3 at home to Boston United. This time the grim news was presented with another slogan: ‘Love changes, life changes. Protect your family with a Will from Symes Baines Broomer Solicitors, your local expert.’
Let’s hope the firm has a few wins with which to be associated in the coming weeks.
