Society welcomes super-exam delay
The Law Society has welcomed the SRA’s decision to delay plans for a new ‘super-exam’ to be taken by all would-be solicitors, after the proposal attracted an overwhelmingly negative response.

Profession faces £27m reform bill
Lawyers are to foot a £27m bill – more than twice the government’s original estimate – to pay for the move to a new system of legal services regulation. The revelation came last week as the lord chancellor, Lord Falconer, published the draft Legal Services Bill.

Women and the law
The merits of women as lawyers are well established, but Miss Indra Somasegaram advocates their still wider admission with the novel, if not very convincing, argument that since ‘criminal acts are mostly connected with a woman or centre round a female character’, a high proportion of women lawyers is essential. This is not an argument which ought to be repeated widely lest other sections of the community whose connection with crime is even closer claim proportional representation.

Legal aid for the poor
The first report of the Committee on Legal Aid for the Poor has been published. The committee was appointed by the lord chancellor and home secretary to enquire what facilities exist for giving to poor persons advice with respect to their legal rights and liabilities.
