The newsdesk regularly receives promotion announcements that largely focus on the individual’s strengths and technical expertise.
That was certainly the case for the press release from Clyde & Co to announce the promotion of Cecily Scutt to partner in its aviation finance practice.
But Obiter’s interest was also piqued by a section of the release detailing Scutt’s leadership qualities, which were demonstrated by her years of captaining the Surrey senior women’s cricket team and current role as a coach of the Spain national women’s cricket team.
Spain is not necessarily considered among the elite of women’s cricket but has ambitions to break into the world’s top 30 and has recruited Scutt and other retired English players to train its national team at specialist facilities in the resort of La Manga.
For Scutt, 34, it’s a dream role, giving her an entry into coaching in an ambitious setup in sunny climes. She fits in coaching spells in Spain through holiday entitlement and has tapped into her sporting career to benefit her work as a lawyer.
‘For me I was lucky that cricket allowed me to develop a lot of skills which I use in my day-to-day work,’ Scutt says. ‘It’s all about developing your leadership style, finding ways to get the best out of people and dealing with pressure.’
Scutt will now drive the continued growth of Clyde’s aviation finance practice and Spain women’s cricket. ¿Cómo es eso?, as the Spanish bowlers might say.
