Shiner fights for anonymity at SDT

The high-profile solicitor facing allegations of misconduct in relation to claims made against British soldiers in Iraq was fighting to have charges against him kept secret as the Gazette went to press. Lawyers for Phil Shiner, of Birmingham firm Public Interest Lawyers, made the argument at a preliminary hearing of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.

Department for Constitutional Affairs minister Bridget Prentice this week vehemently denied that the Legal Services Bill is ‘a short step to tyranny’ as she faced a grilling by a joint parliamentary committee.

Tax man may target wealthy lawyers

Wealthy lawyers are likely to be a prime target of the Inland Revenue following the introduction of tax self-assessment, accountants warned last week. Arthur Andersen estimated that the likelihood of solicitors, barristers and judges being subject to random audits was more than one in 25, compared with one in 100 for general taxpayers.

A visitor from the home counties cannot fail to be surprised by the sheer scale of the county. On a good day, Devon is paradisal, and with Torquay having its best hotels, any conference there is irresistible. Since it will conclude with Humphrey Lyttleton and his Band, how can it fail?

Roll of Honour

Brasher, Francis Cedric, Major, 3rd Indian Corps, previously reported missing, now known to have lost his life in an action with the enemy on the 16th February 1942. He was admitted in 1928 and was a member of the firm of Sandersons & Morgans, of Calcutta.
