A Sheffield firm has announced the death of its senior partner and head of contentious probate Mary Butler. Bell & Buxton Solicitors said Butler died over the weekend after battling with cancer in recent years.

Butler was admitted as a solicitor in 1984 and was recognised as a leader in her chosen field. The firm said she brought ‘warmth, fortitude and tenacity’ to the workplace and won awards and accolades throughout her career. She was described in the most recent Legal 500 as an experienced and talented lawyer who ‘combines technical knowledge with a real streetwise, practical sense of how to crack a case’.

Mary Butler: Wisdom, humour and honesty

Fellow partner and long-time friend, Charles Neal said: ‘Mary was a huge part of the Bell & Buxton family, and as sad as we are that she is gone, we are also equally grateful to have known her and considered her our friend, colleague, and mentor.

‘She touched the lives of all that knew her and brought wisdom, humour and honesty with each encounter.’
