Since when does "artificially high" equate to dishonesty? Have you seen insolvency practitioner rates, or even those for straightforward probate matters? What about estate agents? I'm guessing you haven't seen plumber all out rates around where I live..

Members of public always view solicitor' bills as excessive, even when they don't pay them. I would not expect a former member of the bar to know that though.

Pretty much every other sector has it easy, with the exception being the Legal Aid fraternity. You can charge your clients what you want for the work that you do. You don't start work on 5 cases knowing that 4 will probably fail and you have to pay for the work somehow.

£400 an hour is monstrously high to me. It is still nowhere near the rate of a Grade A family solicitor in some places, or anywhere near commercial litigation rates. He'd never get it but hell why not have a go?
