As a former and totally dissatisfied private client of a vey expensive city law firm the monkeys and peanuts analogy is misleading. I paid said law firm £5,000 (hardly peanuts) to oversee a £125,000 (sterling equivalent ) property purchase. I'm not minted but I wanted to make sure the job was done thoroughly, it wasn't. Said city firm appear not to have even read the title deeds which I subsequently discovered stated that the property was legally defective. They have refused to accept responsibility and threatened me with liable should I name them. My local conveyancing law firms are expensive but they have always delivered what they were paid to do, so I've never resented or quibbled their fees, but this city firm - well politeness prevents me from expressing my frank opinion.
