"I would expect this type of client, who often isn't particularly intelligent or educated"

Wow. Could you be any more patronising?! People who need 'commoditised work' such as conveyancing or divorce are 'not intelligent', 'respond to advertising' and are 'particularly influenced by price'. I've got news for you - very bright people move home and get divorced. Very bright people also like paying for these services at a fee which is (a) as certain as possible and (b) as good value as possible. There aren't a whole bunch of 'intelligent' clients, going around looking for the most expensive way to move home or make or will or get divorced! I'm pretty well educated and relatively wealthy and I wouldn't waste a penny more than I felt appropriate on any of those services; everyone in life wants good value. Oh - and i've got more news for you - whether you like to admit it or not, everyone responds to advertising. Rich or poor, bright or not - that's why every business (including Yachts, Bentleys and posh watch companies) does it.

A final point - the biggest current users of 'fixed/agreed fee' arrangements are FTSE/NASDAQ 100 companies not, as you see it, annoying, stupid individual customers.
