Seems to me.

1. The government believes that justice and legal administration can take care of itself. After all we have had (give or take the odd skirmish and economic hiccough) had nearly 70 years of peace, economic progress and tranquility. And given the scale of what preceded it they have a point. The Blackpool case recently reported shows how crass that error is,

2. The Law society, all decent and well meaning men and women, believe that negotiation and rapprochement is the way to deal with government. So (in a very different context, but for essentially the same reasons) did Neville Chamberlain. It has now had its "Speak for England, Arthur " moment with its lost vote of confidence.

3. The Bar, which as far as I ( as a former solicitor admitted 1966 and retired judge) can see, is the only part of the overall legal profession taking up the cudgels in the only way that is left. There was a supportive article in today's Times.

If there is no change then the Blackpool BCs and their private sector counterparts will prevail, which is not what any of the participants in this debate and action want.
