For once I don't blame the SRA for this. Info such as a practice number has to be given to a variety of organisations since they demand it; prospective PII insurers, mortgage lenders etc so it's already out there. Fraud is widespread today unfortunately and you simply have to do your best and be cynical and suspicious of everything when opening emails. The email I received seemed fairly obviously bogus to me so I didn't open the attachment but called the SRA where I heard their recorded info about the scam (tho` like all push button services, it relied on you pushing the right buttons to get to this recorded announcement - it wasn't that easy to find!) and having heard the info I permanently deleted the email straight away so I no longer have it to forward to the SRA having read the LSG online this morning. Once you've been hit by a scam and all the disruption it then causes, you'll be much more careful. Difficult probably for large practices with lots of staff but the whole system, SRA regulation obviously included, difficulties with mortgage lender panels, etc, is now pushing the profession inexorably towards mergers and expansion of practices. Never mind that they're not always well managed nor provide a good service. I've just lost two conveyancing cases I can't afford to lose because Skipton won't admit SP's to their panel. There! I got in my real gripe at last!
