Being a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, I think this decision is wrong. I don't think that what she did undermines her professional integrity, still less does it affect the reputation of the Bar. Just because one barrister gilds the lily does not mean that all do. The conclusions simply don't follow. She could have been fined, suspended or whatever, there was no need to destroy her career. I doubt very much that Ms Brown would have repeated the conduct complained of.

I think that disciplinary panels - including the SDT - take a ridiculously extreme view, like the report of Katharine Edwards on these pages yesterday. What she did was stupid and wrong but did it mean that her professional career should be in ruins? It's a life sentence with no parole. One day I hope that somebody pursues the human rights aspects of these harsh decisions.
