Freshfields: 1,000 staff. 43,000 pro bono hours. So 43hrs each per year. Just over 3hrs per month each.
How much non-chargeable, unbillable or 'dead' time does the typical legal aid lawyer do in a month? At the very least 10hrs, I would say. I am not criticising Freshfields - their efforts are welcome but let's put it in perspective.
The truth is legal aid lawyers have been propping up the creaking system for a long time already - seeing 'pro bono' as a separate, noble endeavour always makes me laugh.
