What were the Court supposed to do? Usurp the executive policy function? We are going back to a world pre-1948 when the rich could afford the law and the poor could not. Offenders will have to face the reality that the police and the prosecution will shortly be able to do what they like to them. If offenders want a different outcome, then they will have to come up with the cash for their solicitor. For the innocent, this will be a very real nightmare. For the guilty, I don't care. Just as bad a problem with the Government's legal reforms relate to civil law. They are going to prevent access to the Courts through high fees ( because they do what the insurance industry tell them to do). Debt recovery by baseball bat will emerge and it will be very hard to put that genie back in the bottle. Oh and by the way, we contributed in very large measure to the destruction of legal aid.
