I suggest that pupil barristers and trainee solicitors should be allowed, after say one year of their training contract, to act free of charge as MKFs to get some hands-on experience before qualifying. This would become a more active part of their training and plug the black hole created by the legal aid cuts. As things are pupils and trainees go straight from being unqualified to full rights of audience, or in my case in Eastbourne in 1974 appearing and then disappearing before the local coroner.

Thanks a lot, James Webster!
