Not sure what Mr Crawford's latest rant has to do with this particular case; however, I can't imagine any MPs actually do the job for the pay since it isn't much more than I earn but the hours for any half-conscientious MP will be twice what my nominal hours are. And if MPs weren't paid we'd be back to the original system whereby the only ones who could afford to do the job were those with an independent income, held down a well-paid job (like successful barristers) that they could do part time, or were supported by an organisation like a trade union to which they would have been beholden.
