As an old bird I hark back to the early sixties. The practise of paying premiums to solicitors for articles of clerkship went out in about 1960. That arrangement kept the poor people out of the profession, and encouraged them to bercome managing clerks doing much of the mundane work whilst the jags were parked in a row in the golf club. They really were. Happy days!
Meagre recompense was provided throughout five years of articles. Families had to sarifice to pay law school fees, but the exams were rigorous and thorough. Upon qualification the gates were open to the newly qualified, without any debt at all.
My conclusion is that the bureaucrats who have attached themselvers to the profession have unintentionally ruined everything. But they always do. And they don't care a jot.
