What I cannot understand, and I have constantly banged on here about clearing the national debt, is how on earth HMG can glibly talk about bombing Syria, with the inevitable follow up of troops on the ground, when we cannot even afford to keep our security services properly manned, ditto the police, HNS, education, legal system, armed forces, etc etc. I surprised myself by agreeing with Comrade Corbyn on this today. Why can we not at least try cutting off IS's supply of oil, money and arms first? In this respect is Turkey really helping by buying that oil and thereby generating the funds with which to purchase those arms?

It was Labour's invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq which got us into this political and economic mess in the first place. I know this is true because both Claire Short AND now Ken Livingstone say so. How then can we afford another overseas military adventure?

And whilst a francophile I am not sure I would describe her as an ally, more a friend in need. We have, after all, been at war with her on and off since 1346 and only came to her aid in 1914 because we had agreed to guarantee Belgium's neutrality in the Treaty of London, 1838. And she, wisely as it turns out, declined our invitation to join us in the invasion of Iraq in 2003, although that did not keep her out of the sights of the terrorists in Paris two weeks ago.

The two issues of bombing Syria and discipline, or rather the lack of it, in the Labour party, look as if they could combine to our taking an unnecessarily hasty decision which we can ill afford and may well come bitterly to regret.
