Exactly so Peter. The answer, albeit a simplistic one, is that certain religions and societies are overpoweringly patriarchal, and that in itself is due to the emotional and psychological insecurity experienced by the men. To balance that inherent insecurity, their religion and or/society has been based upon the domination and subjugation of women, who the men do not understand, therefore fear, therefore seek to dominate. Islam is one such example and in the various extremist variants of Islam, IS, Taliban, et al this doctrine is even more prevalent and extreme.
