I know I'm probably a lone voice in this. I work in-house and when our opponents are successful in their claims/defences we receive bills which are entirely disproportionate to the litigation. I recently received claimed costs of £6,500 when there was no Defence filed, no witness statements, no experts etc for a simple rent arrears possession claim and that is not unusual. Some of them were for 6 units to reply to my email saying 'thank you'!

Having worked in private practice for a number of years, I absolutely appreciate the need to bring in the money. Though how many of us know friends who need legal advice and say they can't afford it. I do think, as a sector, we charge huge fees which are out of reach of so many people, hence the rise of LiPs.
