As a partner in a high street practice getting rid of the mandatory wage for trainees has allowed us to take on trainees. We give up a huge amount of time to training, thus affecting our own fee earning abilities. We therefore start our trainees on lower wages. They are then given pay rises in accordance with what they bring in in fees. Some of ours have had huge pay increases in a short space of time. If we are to train the next generation then we want to do it properly. We pride ourselves on turning out excellent well rounded lawyers. But when they first come to us from uni they know relatively little, they take up a lot of our time and for the first four months they actually cost us money. This will be the case for high street practices throughout the land. So stop knocking us, we aren't fat cats we are just getting back on track having gone through the financial hell that was the recession.
