It is correct that partnership status 'ain't wot it used to be'. However I recall in the mid 90s becoming partner and taking (unexpectedly) a 33% pay cut. Nonetheless, the partnership status enabled me to secure a 100% pay increase on a merger a couple of years later. And with LLPs (a later innovation) liability can be limited (entirely appropriate for commercial ventures, as law now is).
