The similarity with S&G and the like is the separation of the owners of the business from the providers of its services. The owners just want to see they shares grow in value and a decent dividend in the meantime. They have no interest in the building up of a good reputation over many years, a loyal client base, a will bank, etc etc.
On the other hand those who are employed by the ABS just want to see their monthly pay cheque. They aren't concerned either with the company's reputation, the loyal client base, the will bank, etc etc. And neither side stands to lose his home.

All this short termism will do neither side any good in the long run.
