Anne Wade wants to know, I think, why Janner was not prosecuted 25 years ago. The answer may have been an establishment cover-up, as she says. Equally, it may have been that prosecutors did not think that the available evidence would stand up in court.

If Goddard can find out which it was, fine. I don't suppose that the answer will protect children from abuse in the future but it's certainly within her terms of reference.

What's not within her terms of reference, as I have tried to explain, is to try to establish whether the allegations against Janner were true. That's an entirely separate matter from whether the evidence against him should have been tested in court.

What matters is whether prosecutors thought they could obtain a conviction 25 years ago, not what Goddard thinks about Janner now.
