There is a mantra that there is insufficient competition in the legal services sector, despite the reality that its one of a few consumer services which isn't dominated by one or 2 multi-nationals - there is no Apple/Google/EDF/O2 in legal services, the closest we've got is Slater and Gordon and look what a hash they seem to be making of it.
Where there is competition is in the regulatory sector. How many people are sitting on boards getting daily rates and first class travel expenses to tell us how awful we are?
This is all about protectionism - of the regulatory boards, presumably on the basis that they who shout the loudest ie. make the most radical proposals are those that will survive if someone ever decides to have a bonfire of the quangos.
