Other referenda may not have been binding but parliament abided by the results because the queationasked, and the answer, were both clearly understood. What we have here is an ambiguous result with no guidance as to what people wanted when they voted. Some say they just wanted to restrict immigration but wanted to stay in a single market. Others wanted out altogether. One could have a vote asking people of they want to fly but voting "yes" doesn't make it possible, so if it is impossible to negotiate a fee trade agreement without also agreeing to fire movement of people, what then? Consult with the people, have a debate on Parliament, an election? At some point, the fundamental problem is going to come home to roost and it will become painfully obvious that the UK has been drawn into an ill-conceived March into an ever-deepening bog.
