As the Chair of the London Region Sole Practitioners Group I will declare my position at the outset.

I do not care much for stats frankly but from my anecdotal experience as Chair, the report from Hazlewoods does not ring true to me.

The London Region is thriving, new members are joining regularly and most importantly, I get numerous enquiries from individuals who are in the process of setting up. If there has been a decline as alleged, it certainly is not happening in London as far as I can see.

My colleagues who Chair the other regions indicate the same.

Being a SP does have its tribulations and being a solo is certainly not for the feint hearted. Dealing with the admin and in particular the usual suspects, SRA etc can be a right royal pain.

However, for those with entrepreneurial spirit, drive and enthusiasm it is immensely rewarding. The freedom to determine our direction of travel, the speed at which we travel and the pauses we can take on that journey is incalculable.

We set my goals, set our financial targets and go for it.

The net effect of that is that we get to retain a substaintial portion of what we earn and have a greater satisfaction when we go home at the end of the day.
